Munching Through Munich

The second stop on my whirlwind spring break through Europe was Munich! After an 8 hour long train ride on Sunday, we finally made it to Munich with starving bellies. For dinner, we ate at one of the many Augustiner locations in Munich.

The next morning, we woke up early to catch a train to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein Castle. We barely made our train (picture two girls running through a station) and after two hours, we were in Fussen. A short bus ride took us up to the castle. We took lots of beautiful pictures from many different angles.

Inside the castle, we went on a short tour. We learned about Ludwig II of Bavaria who built the castle and how he died while the castle was still in the beginning stages of construction. Therefore, only about ten rooms in the whole castle were finished. The throne hadn't even been made yet!

After a long day of travel and walking, we had dinner in the center of Munich at the famous Hofbrauhaus. The food was yummy but the atmosphere was the best part about the whole night. And we met a bunch of Austrian guys who were on holiday.

Tuesday, we went on a walking tour of Munich, taking in all the sights while learning about Bavarian history as well as eating the food the region is famous for!

For dinner, we ate another Bavarian meal at a different Augustiner than the first night. There were tons of locals in that one watching futbol.

On Wednesday morning, Audra and I went to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. I learned a lot about concentration camps and how they were not all death camps. Dachau was a work camp, but many prisoners ended up being worked to death or dying from diseases contracted with their 2,000 other housemates. However, the whole place gives you a pretty uneasy feeling knowing you were walking the same paths of those who were forced to work and those doing the forcing.

After a quick lunch in Munich's market, we made our last stop at Munich's 1972 Olympic stadium and village. The stadium was only partially in tact; most of it was converted into a park. There are also really great views of the city from the top of the park!

That evening, we made our way to the airport and hopped on a plane to Barcelona!
